For L.F.D.A. 02.Fabien Verschaere’s distinctive, highly personal world is peopled by monsters, fairies, chimerae and other creatures inspired by fairytales, mythology, or comic books, illustrating the great themes of life with tremendous energy and vitality. Both comic and tragic, Verschaere’s fantasy world is a product of his extremely fertile imagination : its multiple figures, both grotesque and carnivalesque, embody his wildest dreams and most terrifying nightmares. For La Force de l’Art 02, Fabien Verschaere invites the viewer to discover the many different aspects of his work by taking us to the very heart of his “brain”, in a blood-red “container”. Inside, the walls are covered with drawings representing multiple “scenes of life”, while a host of sculptures responds with a panorama of Verschaere’s highly diverse artistic practice, and his burgeoning, fertile private world. Here and there, we cannot fail to spot the artist himself, disguised as a princess, a child, a patient, a doctor… The cleverly orchestrated installation reflects the artist’s generous, open personality, offering us a rich, abundant overview of his work over the past ten years. Fabien VesrschaereThe world that Fabien Verschaere casts on paper or the walls of the places he is invited to exhibit in are filled with anguish and humour, cruelty and magic. Exalting his fantasies, dreams and nightmares, his fantasy characters, inspired by art history as much as by the imagery of tales and mythology, alternately illustrate death, illness, sex and madness. As if carried off by the spirit of Dionysus, the works of Fabien Verschaere carry this extreme vitality that, without pretension, stupefies us and fills us with emotion. [M. A.] Fabien Verschaere was born in 1975 in Vincennes.
